About the Artist

Maria Montoya married Julian Martinez in 1904. Their unorthodox honeymoon was spent in St. Louis demonstrating pottery and dancing for the visitors to the World's Fair. Julian Martinez's family was made up of farmers and basket makers. An accomplished watercolorist, Julian was one of the founders of the Pueblo Painting style along with Crescencio Martinez and Alfredo Montoya. Martinez continued decorating his wife's pottery from 1904 until his death in 1943.
