About the Artist
Born in Baltimore, Nesbitt was a graduate of the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia and also attended the Royal College of Art in London, where he worked in stained glass and etching.
Often Nesbitt's style aligned him with the Photo Realists, but at times his work wore a looser appearance. Studio interiors, articles of clothing, piles of shoes and groupings of fruit and vegetables were frequently his focus. In spite of all this variety, Nesbitt became best known for his immense depictions of flowers (roses, irises and lillies). In 1980 the United States Postal Service issued four stamps based on Nesbitt's floral paintings. He also served as the official artist for the space flights of Apollo 9 and Apollo 13.The artist's work is represented in prestigious U.S. public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
