About the Artist

Mario Avati was born in the French principality of Monaco in 1921. He studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs (School of Decorative Arts) in Nice and in 1947, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts (School of Fine Arts) in Paris. He has resided in Paris for most of his career. Major exhibitions of Avati’s art in New York, Tokyo, London and Los Angeles earned him an international reputation by 1955. Initially working in dry-point and aquatint, Avati began specializing in mezzotint in 1956. In 1957, he participated in the Salon du la Jeune Peinture (Salon of Young Painters) and the following year received the Prix de la Critique (Critic’s Prize) for drawing and printmaking. Mario Avati has worked with the prestigious Tamarind Workshop. An extensive collection of his prints is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In addiotion, his work can be found at the Bibliotheque National, Paris; Museum of Tokyo, Japan; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Library of Congress; the Princeton University Collection; the Rockefeller Collection and many others.
