About the Artist

(1915-1969)  Wilson Dewey was born in 1915 on the San Carlos Apache Reservation in eastern Arizona. He attended the day school at San Carlos, before being sent in 1928 to St. John’s Indian School south of Phoenix. Homesick, he returned to San Carlos where he attended school and painted on his own. From 1935-38 he attended Santa Fe Indian School. He graduated from Albuquerque Indian School in 1939. In 1941 Dewey enlisted in the U. S. Army and served in World War II. At the end of his service, he moved to Santa Fe, where he painted and participated in rodeos.

Wilson Dewey’s work is in public collections at the Gilcrease Museum and the Philbrook Art Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma; the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and in Arizona at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff and the Heard Museum in Phoenix.
