He attended the day school at San Carlos, before being sent in 1928 to St. John’s Indian School south of Phoenix. Homesick, he returned to San Carlos where he attended school and painted on his own. From 1935-38 he attended Santa Fe Indian School. He graduated from Albuquerque Indian School in 1939. In 1941 Dewey enlisted in the U. S. Army and served in World War II. At the end of his service, he moved to Santa Fe, where he painted and participated in rodeos.
