About the Artist
Jacob Landau was born in Philadelphia in 1917, where in 1938 he studied with Earl Horter at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. Known for his work as a painter. printmaker and illustrator. Landau taught drawing at the Pratt Institute from 1957-1986. "Each time we create, we win a victory over decay." Joseph Landau would tell his students.
A member of the National Academy of Design, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Arts Endowment Sabbatical Grant and a Ford Foundation Grant. along with a purchase award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His work is in the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. He received a commission for ten stained glass windows for the Kenneth Israel Synagogue in Philadelphia.
Landau exhibited at the New Jersey State Museum (with Ben Shahn), the Museum of Modern Art, the White House, Tamarind and the Brandywine Workshop. He died in New Jersey in 2001.
