About the Artist
Herman Hansen was born in Germany in 1854. He was educated there and in England. Upon immigrating to the United States, he attended the Art Institute of Chicago. For a period of time, he supported himself as a commercial artist, then moved to San Francisco, where he devoted himself to his painting. Often his works were based on sketches he made on his frequent trips to Montana and to the Southwest.
Among his artist friends in San Francisco were William Keith and Maynard Dixon. He relocated across the bay to Alameda, when his studio was destroyed during the earthquake and fire of 1906.
Although he always preferred painting in oils and particularly watercolors. Herman Hansen took up etching toward the end of his life. He made only eight etchings in his lifetime, assisted by his son, Armin Hansen, a well-known etcher in his own right.
