About the Artist
(Born 1949, Hopi) A niece of Charles Loloma, Verma Nequatewa signs her work "Sonwait", which is the feminine word for beauty in Hopi. Verma works in gold, silver, turquoise, coral, lapis lazuli, ivory, ironwood, sugilite and opals.
Having apprenticed with Charles, the appearance of her jewelry statements resembles to some degree her uncle's designs. Since 1995 she has participated in Indian Market at Santa Fe. Her work has been exhibited at museum exhibitions such as "Women Designers in the USA 1900-2000: Diversity and Difference" held at the Bard Graduate Center in New York, "Jewels of the Southwest" in 2002 and "Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation I" in the same year.
