About the Artist

Toshi Yoshida was born in 1911 in Tokyo. His father, renowned painter and printmaker Hiroshi Yoshida, taught him the art of printmaking and painting at an early age. His mother and grandfather were artists as well. At age nineteen, Toshi accompanied has father on a sketching trip to India and later to Southeast Asia. He had inherited not only his father's talent but also his passion for traveling. After the end of World War II, he traveled all over the world, including Antarctica. Throughout the United States and Europe, Toshi made sketches for new prints, exhibited his art and lectured about woodblock printmaking. Following his father's death in 1950, Toshi began experimenting with abstract art, but within just a few years, returned to his realistic style of depicting landscapes and animals. Towards the end of his life, Toshi Yoshida’s hands were too weak too sign his work, but was still active in the printing studio and supervised the printing process. He died in 1995.
