About the Artist
(Born 1962, Choctaw) While in high school, Chitto was chosen to attend specialized art classes at the Chicago Art Institute and the Illinois Institute of Technology. Later he enrolled in The Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM where he focused on painting until discovering clay. Graduating with degree in both two and three dimensional work, his clay work is now in the permanent collections of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC.; the Denver Art Museum and the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.
Chitto is the winner of a Southwestern Association for Indian Arts Fellowship as well as a Dubin Fellow at the School of American Research.
Keeper of stories and history, the turtle serves as Chitto's primary subject.
