About the Artist

Meiji references a period in Japanese history when Emperor Meiji was in power (1868-1912). Artworks made during his reign are loosely referred to as "Meiji" in date. Crafts from the Meiji period are frequently highly refined in their execution, whereas Japanese woodblock prints and paintings from this period tend to utilize extremely bold color combinations such as purple, red and green, all residing side by side. I find these intensely colorful compositions a good fit when positioned in an otherwise neutral setting. Content-wise,Meiji prints often convey a great deal of drama as well.
