About the Artist
(Born 1975, Navajo) Born at Shiprock, New Mexico, Alicia married Jonathan Black. Mary Black, her mother-in-law taught Alicia how to gather and process the materials for basket weaving. Her designs stem from a reverence for Navajo symbols. The arrangement of her pictorial elements are entirely inventive, unique to her personal aesthetic.
1 1/2 pages are devoted to telling Alicia's story as a basket weaver in Schaaf's book American Indian Baskets I, 1,500 Biographies. Six of her dynamically designed trays enhance her biography--an unusual number devoted to just one weaver in this publication.
