About the Artist
After Kiyochika met Charles Wirgman. journalist of the London Illustrated News and founder of the satirical periodical Japan Punch, he began to create caricatures and humoristic illustrations. A series titled Kosenga depicting everyday Tokyo life (1876-1881) was followed by a historic series (1882-1893). This was followed by a series dealing with the conflicts of Japan with Russia and China (1894-1905).
Kiyochika Artist of Meiji Japan is a book designed to accompany an exhibition held in 1988 at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. It references some of the artist's caricature work. revealing the sequence of some of his best known prints.
