About the Artist

(1934-2020, British)  "An internationally renowned photo-journalist, Bryan Wharton won countless awards for his work for the Sunday Times.  He covered several wars and natural disasters, but is perhaps best known for his incisive portraits of well-known personalities, many of whom became close friends."

The war zones included Lebanon, Egypt and Cambodia.  He covered the student riots in Paris.  Celebrities associated with the "Swinging Sixties" he captured include the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.  Peter O'Toole, the actor and David Hockney, the artist also received the Wharton treatment.

He was given many exhibitions to include a solo display in 1992 in London.  Subsequently Wharton's work was shown in Dublin at the Writers Museum.  In 2001 the National Portrait Gallery exhibited more than twenty of Wharton's photographs acquired for their collection.  These photographs can be viewed on the National Portrait Gallery's website https://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/person/mp18873/bryan-wharton?search=sas&sText=Bryan+Wharton&OConly=true&role=art
