About the Artist
(Ferdinand born 1957, Sylvia born 1958, Zuni) Both full blood Zuni Pueblo tribal members, they are from families working in the jewelry business. Sylvia's family did petit point style of work using turquoise and lapis settings. In Ferdinand's family, his mother Etta Lynn Laate, his teacher was the silversmith. She always told him when she started working on jewelry: make sure no cracks in stones, make sure silver is all soldered right and make sure they are clean.When Ferdinand and Sylvia got together in the 1980's, they started working in channel inlay. Putting their ideas together they create many different designs with natural stone settings and using only sterling silver and 14K gold.
