About the Artist

(Born 1918, Cochiti)  Ku-pe-ru (Snowbeads) was encouraged to paint as a child, but really became interested in art while recuperating from a broker collarbone.

Suina attended the Santa Fe Indian School from 1938 to 1942, studying art with geronima Montoya and Vicenti Mirabel.  Later he worked as a draftsman at the Los Alamos Atomic Laboratory after serving in the army for three years during World War II and then graduating from college in Albuquerque.  Mr. Suina won awards at the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of New Mexico, the Philbrook Art Center and the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial exhibiting widely.

The above was excerpted from the fabulous catalogue to accompany the display of the Denman collection When the Rainbow Touches Down compiled by Tryntje Van Ness Seymour
