About the Artist
(1924-2009) Helen K. Siegl, a printmaker and an illustrator, was born in Vienna, Austria. She studied architecture and design at the Academie Fur Angwandte Kunst in Vienna.
After emigrating to Montreal, Canada in 1952 at which time she married Theodor Siegl, Conservator of Paintings for the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 1959 she became an American citizen.
Siegl was an innovator combining various kinds of blocks and plates to create her artworks, including handmade plaster blocks utilized when wood became scarce in Vienna during World War II. A regular contributor to the Philadelphia Print Club.
Books she illustrated include Aesop's Fables, Dancing Palm Tree, Images from the Old Testament, Mother Goose as well as Oscar Wilde's The Selfish Giant.
