About the Artist
Northwestern California culture encompasses the Yurok, Karuk, Hupa, Tolowa, Whilkut and Chilula people. At times the basketry of these different cultural have been grouped under the classification of Klamath River basketry. Largely Northwestern California basketry items were made by twining the fibers. Their overlay materials most frequently employed Beargrass, maidenhair fern and red dyed woodwardia fern. Hazel tended to be the most common warp material.
