About the Artist
(1936-1997) Carol Jane Mc Carty Mauldin was a Choctaw artist, Valjean Hessing's sister.
Mauldin combined family life and her artistry, frequently painting at night, when the house was quiet. Her style was marked by abstract colorism combined with realistic portraiture.
In 1997 she was awarded the status of Master Artist by the Five Civilized Tribes Museum.
Earth Songs, Moon Dreams: Paintings by American Indian Women by Patricia Broder illustrates Mauldin's work in color and chronicles her life.
