About the Artist

(1898-1965) Born at San Ildefonso pueblo, Jose Angela Aguilar was married to a well known Picuris potter, Rosalie Simbola.  Aguilar painted his wife's pottery as well as how own paintings.

Jeanne Snodgrass's book American Indian Painters:  A Biographical Dictionary references Aguilar with this quote "The artist has been actively engaged in art and related subjects since 1944.  In 1949, he began painting experiments in new directions."

Aguilar's work is in the collections of the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation.

He is cited in the Biographical Directory of American Indian Painters by Patrick Lester, When the Rainbow Touches Down by Tryntje Seymour.
