(Born circa 1905. Cochiti) Mother of Josephine Arquero, Gloria Herrera, Marie Laweka and Martha Arquero, Damacia is remembered as a traditional potter whose effigy figures of people and animals, including dinosaurs are nearly huggable ! Many of her critters are expressive to the degree they trigger smiles from any or all observers.
Her work was featured in the Spring 1983 issue of American Indian Art Magazine, as well as in many noteworthy books covering American Indian pottery.
There is an expression "a painter's painter". Damacia was "a potter's potter" I am proud to include an example of one of her animals in my collection.
