Born in 1947 in the former East Germany city of Heiligenstadt, Elmar Gille wanted to become an artist at an early age. A student at the Institute for Art and Graphic Design in Marburg, he was heavily influenced by the teacher Gertraude Lowien. Lowien transferred some of the love she felt for Italy to her student.
Living in The Netherlands since 1970's, where he focused on a graphics-oriented study at the Royal Academy for Art and Design in s-Hertogenbosch. Often the artist's affinity for Italy drives Gille to partake visits to Tuscany for inspiration.
Gille exhibits in the Netherlands, Germany, the USA as well as in Belgium and Italy.
