About the Artist

(1879-1938) Billed as an American Realist, Frank Van Sloun was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. An student at the St. Paul School of Fine Arts, he later studied at the Art Students League with Robert Henri, followed by attendance at the Chase School.  Van Sloun worked in oil, pastel, tempera as well as etching and monotype.

An art instructor at three different institutions between 1917 and 1926, he died in San Francisco in 1938 while preparing murals for the Golden Gate International Exposition.  

A member of the Internationale des Beaux Arts et des Lettres (1909), Van Sloun also joined the San Francisco Artists Association; the California Society of Etchers; the Society of Mural Painters; the Carmel Artists Association and the Bohemian Club.
