(Born 1954) John Laford was chosen to receive the Canada Council award, enabling him to travel internationally to broaden his scope. Laford originally studied art at Algonquin College in Pembroke, Ontario. He studied pottery with the Zuni pueblo people at the Institute of Indian Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The ancient Native petroglyphs of the Southwest he examined and their influence is evident in the artist's work as well.
Laford has spent considerable time painting in New York and in Spain. His heritage is Ojibway, more specifically Anishinaabe.
