About the Artist

(Born 1943, Ponca) Roye was born in Pawnee, Oklahoma. Known as both a poet and an artist, his media included oil, watercolor, tempera, graphite and prints.

Quoted in Patrick Lester's book The Biographical Directory of Native American Painters, "You seek within yourself to give back to life, however you express your thoughts.  You come to understand your limits, that what you give away you keep. I am practicing to be a father, a husband, a friend."

Roye often includes prose with his paintings to help those enjoying the work to understand what was intended.
