About the Artist

"The homeland of the Owens Valley Paiutes is on the western edge of the Great Basin. Owens Valley itself is more than 80 miles long and four to ten miles wide. . . Owens Valley Paiutes were apparently the only group in the Great Basin to carry out a form of irrigation. . . Plant foods were an important part of the diet of the Owens Valley Pauites. The women gathered more than forty food plants for their nuts, berries, roots, bulbs or seeds." Weaving a Legacy Indian Baskets & the People of Owens Valley, California
