About Benton Spruance

Appreciated for his social and political vision, Spruance created a total of 555 unique, original prints. These efforts were exhibited often and procured for the artist numerous prizes both on the national and international level.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Spruance originally attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts with the intention of studying architecture. From 1925 to 1929 he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

While in Paris, he executed his first lithographs at the shop of Edmond and Jacques Desjobert. 1933 marked his first solo exhibition in New York City at the Weyhe Gallery. The next year he was invited to show in a Second Regional Exhibition: Paintings and Prints by Philadelphia Artists at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Many prestigious exhibitions were to follow before he was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design and before he won a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship to more intensely pursue his interest in lithography both in 1950 and in 1962.
