Zu?i hand-crafted channel inlay uses the four stones representing the four sacred directions--white mother of pearl - north, turquoise - south, red/orange spiney oyster shell - east and black jet representing west. This animated bird has turquoise extensions that are raised and carved, while his spiney oyster shell breast is also raised above the plane of inlay mother of pearl and jet. His beak is parted as though he is in conversation with someone immediately above. The tapering sterling silver tips bear some delicate hand stamping finished with a raindrop tipped silver bead. The metal flange folding over the black braided leather cord on the back is stamped "Bennett C31". It originally had a double wire compression back, that was changed out in the 1950's.
