Description

Golden colored ink in Rittenhouse Square has metallic aspects, a technique within traditional boundaries of Japanese printmaking, not uncommon during the Meiji era (late 19th century to early 20th century)

About the Artist (Born 1953) Born in Yokohama in the Kanagawa Prefecture, Kuroda began studying painting in 1977 at Tama University of Art in Tokyo, completing his Masters degree in 1979.  Travel to the United States in 1984 was made possible due to a prestigious educational grant.

Kuroda harnesses a mix of different intaglio printmaking techniques to carry out his interest in depicting movement.  His choice to sparingly apply color results in color as an accent.  Otherwise the graphical element dominates, not the color.

Most often the artist's subject matter employs bicycles and umbrellas.  Overall there is a sense of abstraction coupled with motion.
