Remarkable Polychrome Low Shoulder Jar

Mark Tahbo

About The Remarkable Polychrome Low Shoulder Jar

Tahbo's fashioned this jar at the age of thirty.  The shape of this jar is graceful.  Its painted decoration is equally eloquent, complimenting its contour with unstinting confidence.  Its peach glow coloration is entirely sympathetic.  Could there be a more perfect pot ?

About the Artist

(Born 1958, Hopi) "A resident of the First Mesa in Hopi, northeastern Arizona, Mark Tahbo creates pottery that is classified as Sikyatki Revival Ware, named for the village of Yellow House that is known for its pottery with swirling yellow, orange and red colors reminding of a sunset in the desert. Tahbo's pottery is inspired by petroglyphs.  His designs are abstract and suggest animals, birds, butterflies, and clouds.

The artist applies his color with a traditional yucca brush. His forms are made from local clay, hand-coiled and pit fired, which is entirely traditionalmethodology.

His great grandmother was the accomplished potter, Grace Chappella (circa 1874-1980)."
