Well conceived and executed, it is proof that fine "cluster" arrangements are not the exclusive domain of the Zuni.  

Set with a total of 234 hand-cut natural turquoise cabochons, the crowned double row naja and its companion blossoms make a dramatic statement.  The center petal of each of the 12 flowers is set with a turquoise tear drop, which is very unusual.

About the Artist Francis M. Begay of Tuba City, AZ is a Navajo jeweler working in the tradition of Zuni-style lapidary work. This artist first used the stamp "F.M. Begay" in 1975.
Medium Sterling silver, fabricated using commercially mill rolled sheet and wire. Bezels are file serrated. Rain drops are made of molten silver.
Troy ounces 1.36 troy ounces
Size 25" overall length with an additional 2 1/2" drop in the height of the naja. Naja is 2 1/2" height X 2 1/2" width. Blossoms are 1 5/8" length X 7/8" width. Partial double row of beads each bead measures 1/4" length X 9/ 16" width. 162 hand-made beads
Signed "F.M. Begay" stamped on the back of naja
Date of creation Circa 1975 to early 1980's
Turquoise 234 hand-cut natural turquoise stones of an intense deep blue color with less than 1% of any kind of matrix, making mine identification only an educated guess, other than to say it is AAA grade untreated material, tear drop and oval in shape.
