About The Christian Cross with Blue Gem Turquoise

This late 50's early 1960's tufa cast cross is handsomely & simply rendered with nail head terminals and a single hand cut Blue Gem mine turquoise stone. The deep teal blue stone is somwhat translucent and devoid of matrix--a male sky stone perfect for the spiritual symbolism of this cruciform pendant as it relates Native culture with Anglo-European Christian motifs.

With most Indian-made crosses the emphasis is one reason for wearing such a symbol and not on a show of wealth. Materials and workmanship are always the best out of respect for the items meaning which in this piece conveys a quiet strength.

The Navajo were the first of the Native Americans of the Southwest to learn silversmithing from the Spanish. Most Navajo jewelry emphasizes silver, with turquoise stones used as an accent. Some pieces are cast in sand or tufa molds, while others are hammered, using a male stamp and a female die.
