About Milland Lomakema

(Born 1941) Dawakema (House of the Sun)

This artist's works began to be noticed and appreciated in the late 1960's.  He attended elementary school on the Reservation and finished tenth grade in Idaho. Although he studied at Magic Valley Christian College in Delco, Idaho; Lomakema is self taught with no formal training in the arts.

In 1968 he joined the Hopi police fore and spent much of his time entering art competitions.  That same year his "Sea & Serpent" won first place in the Heard Museum's Indian Art Show.  Currently his work is in many museums and in 1973 he joined the Artist Hopid and toured with that group.  In addition to exhibiting his paintings, Lomakema has lectured on the objectives of the group.
