View Full Size Image of Caiman (Crocodile) Body Mask, Masks by Artist Unknown
This is a realistic open-mouthed crocodile, designed to be stepped into and worn around the waist of the dancer.
The various caiman dances are, as a rule, performed by young boys who have the requisite small waists.
See Donald Cordry's Mexican Masks for a discussion of the caiman and its prehispanic symbolism. A dancer is shown wearing a caiman body mask around his waist.
"Unknown artist" is appropriate when a work of art is unsigned and a supported opinion about who made it is not available (on Savvy Collector).. "Attributed to" precedes the name of an artist when information suggests that it likely was made by that artist (on Savvy Collector).
