About The Coyote Koshare Sitting Melon

Fonseca's expression involving the coyote koshare is legend!

About Harry Fonseca

(1946-2006) Fonseca studied art at California State University, Sacramento earning his MFA in painting.

In 1976 he received a special projects grant from the California Arts Council to prepare a series of paintings and drawings documenting the Maidu Origin myth.

Frequently, Fonseca depicted the coyote, a legendary trickster found in many stories. He has a human-like personality and frequently falls victim to poor judgment. In a documentary film titled "Fonseca: In Search of a Coyote", the development of his coyote series was investigated. Two other bodies of work, one titled Stone Poems and the enigmatic St. Francis series were well received in Japan and Germany.

Fonseca's last canvases featured parallel horizontal bands of color, yielding a meditative quality when colors were subtle.
