- About The Tormenta
Zarco's work is typically sold through the Latin Arts Center in downtown Phoenix, where you can see both his Japanese period masks and those that relate more clearly with "Tormenta". His masks are frequently titled on the mask's interior surface.
- About Zarco Guerrero
Born circa 1950, this artist has been active in the Arizona art scene since the early 1970's, as both a multi-media artist and a community arts advocate. He has participated in the Artist in Education program of the Arizona Arts Commisison and has conducted workshops through the US since 1972.
Guerrero has had solo exhibitions in Mexico and throughout the United States. He is the founder of Xicanindio Artes, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to better understanding of Latino and American Indian arts in Mwa, Arizona. This gentleman also co-founded Cultural Coalition.com in Phoenix.
In 1984 PBS broadcast nationally a one hour documentary about his work titled The Mask of El Zarco. In 1986 he was awarded the presitigious Japan Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, spending one year in Kyoto, Japan. In Kyoto he studied Noh Masks as an apprentice to Joshun Fukakusa
In 1990 Guerrero received the Arizona Commission on the Arts Artist Project Grant to pursue his mask carving in Mexico.
Face to Face in a Frenzy (now available on DVD)is a one man play by Zarco in which masks are extensively used.
Still another accomplishment by this Arizona talent is the completion in 1998 of a greater than life-size bronze casting of farm worker leader, César Chávez, commissioned by the City of Phoenix.
Arizona is fortunate to have such a talented individual!
