About Chabela

Born Elizabeth C. Haas in 1904, Mrs. Haas brightened lives for decades with her cheerful portrayals of children and adults she experienced when visiting Mexico. Her paintings depictions life in different regions in Mexico, always focused on the people who she considered to be warm and colorful.

I met her years ago as a senior citizen living in a high rise building in downtown Phoenix, where she proudly told me about her daily swim and deliberately optimistic view of the world.

Her career as a painter began at the age of 58.  Her friend, Manuel Leal dubbed her "Chabela" and encouraged her to paint from the heart. Thirty two years later Mrs. Haas had sold over a thousand paintings. She has had exhibitions in Madrid, Spain; Washington,D.C.; Guatemala City; Palm Beach, Florida; Spokane, Washington; Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Philbrook Art Center; at Laguna Beach, California and at Prairie Village, Kansas.

In 1995 a book Chabela illustrated was published, titled Chabela's Fiesta Memories and Recipes.
