About The Artwork

The artist's Hopi name, Lomawywesa translates to Walking in Harmony.

Night Sky is a beautifully balanced composition infused with intensely saturated color and lyrical line quality.

About The Artist

(1942-2009) Michael Kabotie was one of the three founding members of the Artist Hopid and was the spokesman for the group. He studied art with his father and graduated from Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas.

One of his paintings has graced the cover of Arizona Highways magazine. His awards were numerous and he was an active participant in all phases of Hopi life. Well respected as an outstanding artist Michael Kabotie lectured at museums and universities throughout the United States including Harvard University, Rochester Museum of Science, San Diego State University and Northern Arizona University.

Illustrations of his works can also be see in Hopi Painting by Patricia Broder and Southwest Indian Painting by Clara Lee Tanner.

In the late 1950's Kabotie was first exposed to work as a jeweler. This painter produced murals for the Sunset Crater National Monument as well as a three-wall kiva mural at the Museum of Northern Arizona. He wrote a book of poetry, Migration Tears: poems about transitions, published in 1987 by the University of California Press.

In 2002 Kabotie was named an Arizona Indian Living Treasure.  Michael was selected to represent the 52nd Annual Heard Museum's Indian Fair and Market scheduled for March 2010.
