About The Pair of Hippotigris Engravings

This pair of hand-colored book plates are charming, originally having been created for The Naturalist Library published in London between 1833 and 1842.

About William Home Lizars

(1788-1859) This Scottish engraver and painter studied at the Academy of Edinburgh. From 1820, Lizars' focus was narrowly directed toward natural history subjects. Lizars produced delicate miniature engravings. Between 1833 and 1842 a total of forty volumes were published on fish, insects, reptiles, birds and mammals. Each of these books included as least thirty engravings by Lizars.

His paintings Reading the Will and A Scotch Wedding now in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh, were exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1812.  He turned to Engravings to better provide for his brothers and sisters, following his father's death.
