About the Artist
(Born 1947) Axton earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Kansas City Art Institute followed by his Master of Fine Arts at Yale. While at Yale, Axton studied with notable artists: Joseph Albers, Ad Reinhardt and Stuart Davis.
While this artist has exhibited widely in museum settings throughout his career, Axton has been represented for twenty three years by Ventana Fine Art in Santa Fe. His work is also available for purchase at Total Arts Gallery in Taos, New Mexico.
Axton's work has been summarized as follows: "His minimal horizons draw the viewer into the canvas to peacefully contemplate the fusion of reality and imagination."
John was awarded an "Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award" by his alma mater, Southern Illinois University in 1988, when they established a summer arts program in his name.
His inclusion in "Covering the West", the prestigious traveling exhibition curated by the editors of Southwest Art Magazine in 1996, introducted John's art to visitors of the Albuquerque Museum, Albuquerque, NM; the Tucson Museum of Art, Tucson, AZ; the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City, OK ; the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, Los Angeles, CA and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Colorado Springs, CO.
