- Theophile Alexandre Steinlen may have been a contributor to the change from naturalism towards descriptive journalism with his exploration of social commentary in the visual arts. Typically, Steinlen's works are of domestic scenes with children and cats reminiscent of Picasso's Blue period. Many of his designs were exceptional with a strong popular appeal. His works are in the permanent collections of the Berlin Galerie Nationale and Le Chemineau at Lausanne.; Steinlen was fascinated with cats and did a bronze "Angora". He was known as an artist of the street and was a participant in the Salon des Humoristes.
He created in total 382 original lithographs and 115 etchings.
